Can bulletproof glass break if it is shot enough times with an AK-47 firing 7.62mm rounds?

Question:
Can bulletproof glass break if it is shot enough times with an AK-47 firing 7.62mm rounds?

Answers:
Nothing is OFFICIALLY called bulletproof. That is a euphemism that the media and those who don't know any better perpetuate. The official term is "bullet-resistant", which more closely describes the true nature of things.
What people normally call bulletproof glass is actually a glass/polycarbonate (a high strength plastic, similar to that used in airplane windows) laminate. When struck, the glass layers do shatter, but they are contained by the polycarbonate, thereby preventing the entire window from shattering and dissipating the energy from the bullet. If enough bullets hit in a compromised area or have more energy than the glass can dissipate, they will punch through. For example, glass rated as resistant to 7.62mm AK-47 rounds will not stop a 50 caliber round.
A bulletproof vest works much the same way, absorbing and dissipating the majority of the bullet's energy, rather than diflecting it.

Considerations and Guidelines for Glass Floring Applications

Glass has been used as a flooring product for more than 100 years. Often found in historic buildings, it was typically a molten cast product of varying thicknesses. Today, glass flooring and stair treads, usually installed by glazing contractors, are in high demand. Since glass can be utilized safely in flooring applications, it is being specified at an amazing pace. It can now be found in restaurants, galleries, libraries, corporate offices, retail businesses and private residences around the world.
The use of glass flooring has accelerated for a number of reasons. One reason is because it provides daylighting. Daylighting occurs when natural light filters into areas that would have to be lit typically with artificial light. Glass flooring allows natural light to brighten the area without the need for artificial light.
Another reason for choosing glass flooring is the dramatic ambiance it can provide. Many designs call for fully-exposed, monolithically polished glass edges and structural support systems that appear to allow the glass to float in place. This provides a level of elegance that cannot be found in other flooring products.

The Elements
Glass flooring is made of mutli-layer, laminated panels, and no two glass flooring projects are alike. The number of glass lites per panel and overall thickness varies from project to project; there is no such thing as a standard make-up or thickness that will work in every situation. Structural support is also important when working with glass flooring because it dictates the final glass make-up.
The top layer of glass flooring should include an anti-slip surface. Many anti-slip design options are available, including sandblasted, acid-etched, cast, ceramic frit and silk-screened glass.

Play it Safe
Whatever top surface effect used, surfaces need to be tested properly for slip resistance. Many in the construction industry recognize Underwriters Laboratories (UL) as a trusted source for product compliance. UL 410 is the standard for slip resistance of floor surface materials.
A monolithically polished edge on stair treads is a highly requested treatment. With such an edge, a fully laminated panel, rather than individual lites, is polished prior to laminating. Monolithically polished edges provide a high level of quality and allow for a less blunt edge on the glass treads so there is less opportunity for breakage.
Manufacturers currently offer fully annealed glass panels, fully tempered panels or a combination of annealed and tempered in their flooring solutions. The use of fully annealed panels in flooring applications could result in serious safety concerns for patrons. For example, in the event of a panel failure, a fully annealed panel is likely to have a consistent break pattern between all annealed lites and, in turn, not hold a person’s weight. In other words, an individual could fall through the glass and/or sustain serious injuries. A fully tempered laminated panel, however, has been proven in testing to be strong and safe.

Privacy, Please
Many public locations require a privacy-type glass to ensure an individual’s modesty. Other projects require a totally transparent glass so that video or artwork can be seen below while walking on top of the glass. The top, anti-slip layer of glass or the bottom layer of glass provides these options, which can be a cast panel of glass, acid-etched layer or a sandblasted, clear tempered panel.
Adding color is yet another option for glass flooring. This can be achieved through solid colored glass, colored laminated interlayers or via painting. With manufactured colored glass, color is an inherent part of the glass. This type works well with a fully exposed edge and when a solid, consistent color is desired for the entire panel. Interlayers can be used to tint the glass panel to the desired color when exposed edges are not involved. With painted glass, numerous custom effects/designs can be achieved, and the number of colors available is unlimited.

Safety Assured
As the popularity of glass flooring has grown, some manufacturers have begun to offer glass-flooring products that are not tested or engineered properly. Using such products could pose potential liability issues. Along with a UL-tested and approved top surface, the glass and the structural support system for the project should be engineered properly. A tested product, a manufacturer employing a structural glass engineer (different than a regular structural engineer) and with glass flooring experience can make the entire process smooth and safe for everyone.

Switchable privacy glass features

Principle
How is this possible? The secret of the transformation between clear and translucent is found in the Liquid Crystal Sheet within the laminated glass panel. The randomly aligned Liquid Crystal molecules are such that it disperses light. However, when voltage is applied, these same molecules arrange themselves in a specific direction in such a way as to permit parallel light to pass through the glass.

Features
1,Response time

The response time from translucent to clear is approx.1/1000 sec. and from clear to translucent can be achieved in approx.1/100 sec.

2,Liquid Crystal Sheet Size

With continuous research and development efforts of our leading and well-respected supplier, Liquid Crystal sheets are now available in a size up to 47''x 118'' or 1200 x 3000mm making expanded applications possible in many fields.

3,Low power consumption

The electrical power required to operate the switchable light control is only .32W/sq ft. (3.5W/sq meter) and no special maintenance is also required. Thus, the tremendous benefits of the material are realized at a very inexpensive operating cost.

Why use laminated glass?-Explore these "Top 10" benefits

Why use laminated glass?
Explore these "Top 10" benefits:

In home construction or in other building projects, the benefits of using laminated glass include:

• Safety
• Security
• Sound Reduction
• Solar Energy Control
• UV Control
• Weather/Natural Disasters
• Durability
• Design Versatility
• Installation Ease
• Low Visible Distortion

Safety
Ordinary window glass is brittle, breaking into long sharp pieces which can cause serious and sometimes fatal injuries. The principal feature of
laminated safety glass is its performance under
impact. We interlayers absorb the energy of the impact, resisting penetration. Although the
glass may break, the glass fragments remain firmly bonded to the interlayer, minimizing the risk of injuries. Little wonder that laminated glass is mandatory for automotive windshields in almost every industrialized country in the world and increasingly specified or required in architectural glazing.

In glass skylights, sunspaces, sloped glazing installations and curtainwalls, there is always the possibility of glass breakage. Without laminated glass, that could mean a big safety problem caused by falling glass. Unlike all types of monolithic glass, laminated glass remains intact when broken, protecting people from injury. This is why many building codes worldwide require laminated glass
for overhead glazing.

Security
Burglars often break windows to get to door and window handles, and laminated glass can resist their intrusion. Even if it is accidentally broken, the interlayer continues to safeguard the building until the glass is replaced. Reglazing can be done when convenient, rather than during expensive after-hours.

Laminated glass can be designed to withstand bullets and bomb blasts by using multiple or thick layers of glass and interlayer. In prisons, laminated security glass can replace traditional bars to create a more humane environment.

The rise in urban crime and terrorism has created a need for glazing materials that enable people to carry on normally and be protected from harm. Laminated glass made up of several glass sheets
and interlayers can provide protection in medium to high security applications. For extra security,
including uparmoring of vehicles,
AJJ Glass offers DuPont SentryGlas® Plus interlayers with 100 times the stiffness and 5 times the toughness of traditional interlayers.

Sound reduction
Noise, just like a burglar, gains easiest entry to homes and buildings through windows. Laminated glass has proven to be an excellent barrier to noise, having a higher sound reduction index than
monolithic glass of equal thickness between the frequencies of 125Hz and 4,000Hz. This sound
dampening is due to the "viscoelastic" properties of the interlayer material. The coincidence effect experienced with monolithic glass at certain frequencies is also considerably reduced with laminated glass, and the noise reduction performance of
IG units can be greatly improved by incorporating at least one layer of laminated glass.

Tailored for noise control applications, DuPont™ SentryGlas® Acoustic™ sound reduction interlayers
are available.

Solar energy control
While natural light plays an important role in architectural design, too much sunlight can also mean too much heat.
Tinted laminated glass can reduce heat gain from sunlight to lower air conditioning costs, and it can also control glare.

Laminated glass also can be used to combine reflective coated glass or low-E glass with heat- absorbing glass tints. In warm climates, these combine the penetration resistance and sound reducing qualities of laminated glass with good shading and energy management. In laminated
glass containing coated glass, the metallic coating faces toward the inside of the laminate, where it
is protected from harmful dirt or contact.

UV control
The major cause of deterioration and fading of furnishings and pictures is the chemical reaction caused by short-wavelength UV radiation. UV-absorbing additives in the interlayer in laminated glass can screen out almost all these damaging rays.

Protection from weather and natural disasters
If broken, laminated glass remains in its frame, preventing interior damage, while reduced flying glass protects people both indoors and outdoors.

In developed areas subject to heavy winds and rains such as hurricanes or cyclones, buildings often need extra protection. Flying debris carried by these winds can shatter the glass of windows and doors, injuring people and opening buildings to often devastating further damage. Laminated glass constructions can be properly designed to remain intact under impact and keep the envelope of the home or building sealed.

Glass fallout in earthquakes exposes people to dangerous broken shards. Again, laminated glass has been shown to keep the glass intact and in its frame.

Durability
Laminated glass is durable, maintaining its color and strength, and is as easily cleaned as ordinary glass.

Design versatility
Laminated glazings can be manufactured flat or curved, and include
annealed, toughened, heat- strengthened, spandrel, wired, patterned, tinted and reflective glasses. DuPont glass laminating interlayers can be used to add color tints or increase the opacity of the glazing, for further design aesthetics or privacy needs.

For even more design freedom, DuPont™ SentryGlas® Expressions™ offers decorative interlayers in
a range of transparencies. High-resolution digital printing adds custom color effects, words, patterns
or images - anything you imagine - to the interlayer prior to lamination. Located inside the glass, your design is beyond the reach of stains, fingerprints, abrasions or harsh cleaning chemicals. The result is a durable, easy-to-maintain, "signature" or branded environment with the full safety performance of conventional laminated glass.

Installation ease
Laminated glass is simple to install. Standard-sized, two-ply glass panels can be cut to size on-site, and can also be drilled or notched.

Low visual distortion
Laminated building glass is usually glazed in an annealed form, avoiding the distortion caused by
"roller waves" in
tempered and heat-strengthened glass. Sharp reflected images are possible with curtainwalls constructed of laminated annealed glass.

Safety glass (extra-strength and safe breaking)

Safety glass (extra-strength and safe breaking)
Choose a suitable safety glass to protect yourself from the risk of serious injury caused by accidental breakage or impact.

Safety glass can be either toughened or laminated depending on where and how it is being used. When it breaks, it breaks safely thus protecting against the risk of serious injury.

How does it work?
There are two glass types available to protect against the risk of injury. The choice is made depending on where and how the glazing is being used.
Toughened safety glass has undergone a heat treatment to increase its overall strength. Generally it is 5 times stronger than normal glass. To give an example a piece of 8mm toughened glass can withstand the impact of a 0.5kg steel ball dropped from 2 metres. If the glass does break, it breaks safely into thousands of tiny pieces with dull, safe edges.
Laminated safety glass comprises two pieces of glass held together by one or several plastic films like a glass sandwich! In the effect of breakage or impact, these films hold the glass in place. The glass still breaks into pieces, but they remain adhered to the film(s).

Benefits
Safety glass has many benefits:

Toughened glass
Avoids potential cuts and injuries as a result of broken glass (for example used in doors, table tops, shower screens etc).
Laminated glass
Laminated glass: assembled using a single plastic film.
basic protection
provides protection against the risk of injuries due to accidental breakage (for example windows or patio doors)
Laminated glass: assembled using two or more plastic films. enhanced protection
provides protection against a change in level (e.g. balconies or guarding) and objects falling on to or penetrating the glass (e.g. glass roofs and canopies).
The pieces of glass stay in place, stuck to the plastic interlayers, until a replacement arrives.
Safety glass for safe breakage or overhead glazing can be combined with other glass functions for additional comfort: security, thermal insulation, acoustic insulation, low-maintenance and decorative glass.

Laminated Glass--Protection against burglary or vandalism

Laminated Glass--Protection against burglary or vandalism

What is it ?
Laminated safety glass are made up of two or more sheets of glass bonded together with a plastic interlayer. After the plastic has been placed between the glass sheets, the whole assembly is subjected to heat and pressure. This results in the complete adhesion of the vinyl and the glass.

In the event of breakage, the glass fragments remain bonded to the plastic interlayer. In a fully framed conventional installation the glass fragments are held together and the glass retains a residual strength while awaiting replacement.

Advantages
This laminated safety glass provides many solutions for the protection of people. If broken, the glass remains bonded to a plastic sheet and is less likely to cause injury to people or property. The plastic sheet also makes penetration more difficult
These glass products are designed for differing levels of protection, from vandalism to burglary

Application
Sloped/Overhead Glazing
Museums, Prisons, Government Buildings
Jewelry Stores, Banks, Airports
Safety Glazing Applications
Schools, Hospitals, Hotels
Interior Partitions, Office Buildings

Installation Guidelines
This laminated glass comprises one or more pieces of glass held together by several clear, plastic films. If the glass is broken, the glazing remains in place as the fragments of glass adhere to the plastic films. In the event of attempted break in this will prevent or slow down entry. 
Choose from an entire range of glass to help protect your home

Benefits
Anti-burglary function: protect your home and possessions from intruders.
Gain peace of mind from the added security of your windows. 
You remain safe and secure around glazed areas. 

Tempered glass - Protect from injury for complete peace of mind

Tempered glass - Protect from injury for complete peace of mind

What is it ?
Tempered glass is a toughened safety glass. It has undergone a special heat treatment to increase its strength and resistance to impact. In fact it is approximately five times more resistant than normal glass. As an example a piece of 8mm toughened glass will be able to withstand a steel ball weighing 500gr dropped from a height of 2 metres.

Advantages
Five times more resistant to breakage than normal glass. 
If the glass does break, there is far less risk of injury from broken pieces.
More opportunity for large areas of glazing without substituting your safety, including framless designs such as doors, showers screens, table tops and so on.

Installation Guidelines
Toughened glass cannot be drilled or any other processed and edgeworked in any manner. Toughened glass ordered to templates must be accompanied with a full scale template made to the correct dimensions.
Minimum edgework finish on toughened glass up to 12mm is a standard arrissed edge. Minimum edgework on greater thicknesses should be a flat ground edge; 
Slight distortion or bowing may occur after toughening but is largely controllable. It will vary with substance, tint, surface treatment, size and shape of the glass. Ceramic painted, sandblasted or reflective coated glass has a greater tendency to bow and special tolerances would be advised. Flatness will be measured when the glass is standing on edge with a straight edge placed along the full length of the panel and a wedge measurement taken at the centre position. Refer to our technical department for more information.

Production Range
Maximum size: 3000*9000mm 
Minimum size: 200*200mm 

Glass Stairs

Glass stairs or glass staircases are becoming more and more in vogue. AJJ Glass produce glass components for glass staircase systems; i.e. glass stair treads and glass balustrade infill panels.

Glass stairtreads are generally manufactured using a combination of 10mm float and 25mm float, laminated together. A non slip surface can be achieved in several ways, the most popular being an all over sandblast and ritec coat finish. Another popular anti-slip preference is for grooves to be cut into the front edge of the tread.

Approximately 1m² is usually considered to be a practical maximum area for each panel - due to handling considerations. The glasses should be installed with the thicker glass ply uppermost, and consideration must be given to the surface finish of the glass.

Glass Floor panels

Glass floor panels are increasingly popular in contemporary interior and exterior applications. Glass floor panels allow light to pass from underneath to show illumination or to allow light to brighten the space below the floor.

AJJ Glass Products supplies thick laminated glass floor panels to meet your most demanding requirements and you can have patterns, decorative interlayers, colors, textures and more.

Glass floor panels are usually constructed of 2 or more glass panels, laminated together.

Approximately 1m² is usually considered to be a practical maximum area for each panel - due to handling considerations. The glasses should be installed with the thicker glass ply uppermost, and consideration must be given to the surface finish of the glass.

Glass dance floors for instance are usually specified in 15mm float laminated to 25mm float. Corridors are 25mm laminated to 25mm, and for domestic dwellings, 10mm laminated to 19mm is more usual.

Switchable glass

STG(Switchable Transparent Glass)is a laminated glazing comprising two sheets of glass, either clear or tinted, and a STF(Switchable Transparent Film). The STF and the glass panes are assembled by means of two interlayer films (exp EVA film).

The process of manufacturing STG
The process of manufacturing Switchable Transparent Glass and laminated glass alike.Wrap the entire laminate with rubber bag (bag method) or to seal only the glass end with rubber ring (ring method) or to cover the entire laminate with STF.
Main steps:
1、Material arrangement
2、Laminating
3、Vacuum & heat
4、Joint wire5、Making protector

Mirrored Glass

To produce mirrored glass, a metal coating is applied to one side of the glass. The coating is generally made of silver, aluminium, gold or chrome. For simple mirrored glass, a fully reflective metal coating is applied and then sealed with a protective layer. To produce "one-way" mirrors, a much thinner metal coating is used, with no additional sealing or otherwise opaque layer.

Mirrored glass is gaining a more prominent place in architecture, for important functional reasons as well as for the aesthetic effect.

Coated

Surface coatings can be applied to glass to modify its appearance and give it many of the advanced characteristics and functions available in today's flat glass products, such as low maintenance, special reflection/transmission/absorption properties, scratch resistance, corrosion resistance, etc.

Coatings are usually applied by controlled exposure of the glass surface to vapours, which bind to the glass forming a permanent coating. The coating process can be applied while the glass is still in the float line with the glass still warm, producing what is known as "hard-coated" glass.

Alternatively, in the "off-line" or "vacuum" coating process, the vapour is applied to the cold glass surface in a vacuum vessel.

Annealed Glass

Annealed glass is the basic flat glass product that is the first result of the float process. It is the common glass that tends to break into large, jagged shards. It is used in some end products -- often in double-glazed windows, for example. It is also the starting material that is turned into more advanced products through further processing such as laminating, toughening, coating, etc.

Laminated Glass

Laminated glass is made of two or more layers of glass with one or more "interlayers" of polymeric material bonded between the glass layers.

Laminated glass is produced using one of two methods:

Poly Vinyl Butyral (PVB) laminated glass is produced using heat and pressure to sandwich a thin layer of PVB between layers of glass. On occasion, other polymers such as Ethyl Vinyl Acetate (EVA) or Polyurethane (PU) are used. This is the most common method.

For special applications, Cast in Place (CIP) laminated glass is made by pouring a resin into the space between two sheets of glass that are held parallel and very close to each other.

Laminated glass offers many advantages. Safety and security are the best-known of these -- rather than shattering on impact, laminated glass is held together by the interlayer, reducing the safety hazard associated with shattered glass fragments, as well as, to some degree, the security risks associated with easy penetration. But the interlayer also provides a way to apply several other technologies and benefits, such as colouring, sound dampening, resistance to fire, ultraviolet filtering, and other technologies that can be embedded in or with the interlayer.

Laminated glass is used extensively in building and housing products and in the automotive and transport industries. Most building façades and most car windscreens, for example, are made with laminated glass, usually with other technologies also incorporated.

Toughened glass

Toughened glass is treated to be far more resistant to breakage than simple annealed glass, and to break in a more predictable way when it does break, thus providing a major safety advantage in almost all of its applications.

Toughened glass is made from annealed glass treated with a thermal tempering process. A sheet of annealed glass is heated to above its "annealing point" of 600 °C; its surfaces are then rapidly cooled while the inner portion of the glass remains hotter. The different cooling rates between the surface and the inside of the glass produces different physical properties, resulting in compressive stresses in the surface balanced by tensile stresses in the body of the glass.

These counteracting stresses give toughened glass its increased mechanical resistance to breakage, and are also, when it does break, what cause it to produce regular, small, typically square fragments rather than long, dangerous shards that are far more likely to lead to injuries. Toughened glass also has an increased resistance to breakage as a result of stresses caused by different temperatures within a pane.

Toughened glass has extremely broad application in products both for buildings and for automobiles and transport, as well as other areas. Car windshields and windows, glass portions of building façades, glass sliding doors and partitions in houses and offices, glass furniture such as table tops, and many other products typically use toughened glass. Products made from toughened glass often also incorporate other technologies, especially in the building and automotive & transport sectors.
